About the exchange rate

The server fetches the exchange rate automatically and caches it for 6 hours. Check the date and time shown. If fetching fails, a saved rate is used. You can also override the rate manually.

Why does the US use miles and gallons?

The US used British imperial units before independence, and they stayed in daily life afterwards.

The 1975 Metric Conversion Act encouraged conversion, but it was voluntary, not mandatory. The US Metric Board was then abolished in 1982, and momentum stalled.

Changing road signs, machines, blueprints, and textbooks would cost a huge amount of money and effort. That is why the old units remain in daily life, although science, medicine, the military, and car manufacturing use metric units.

Note that the US gallon (about 3.785 litres) differs from the imperial gallon (about 4.546 litres). This tool uses the US gallon.
